If you're planning to be outside this weekend, expect heat and wind. Weak to moderate Santa Anas started building late Thursday and peak Saturday with gusts of 30 to 45 mph, said Rich Thompson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Oxnard. Highs near 90 could be common, warmest along the coast.

Saturday's Santa Ana peak by the numbers

30 to 45 mph
gusts common in wind-prone Ventura and L.A. county areas
55 mph
isolated gusts possible in the mountains
8% to 20%
relative humidity forecast in the warning area

A Red Flag Warning runs 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday for the Santa Clarita Valley, Santa Susana Mountains, Santa Monica Mountains and western San Gabriel Mountains. Recent rain helped a little, but forecasters say the region isn't "out of the woods" on fire danger.

Heading to the coast? Surf in Ventura County could run 3 to 5 feet, so we suggest checking conditions before you swim.

  • Advisory-level winds: 50% to 70% chance Saturday and Sunday
  • Live fuel moisture: 65% to 80%
  • Possible rain Nov. 13-16: 40% to 60% chance of over 1 inch

The warm, windy stretch runs into next week

  1. Nov. 7 runs 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. for parts of L.A. County.
  2. Nov. 8Temperatures are expected to peak.
  3. Nov. 10Offshore flow is expected to weaken, followed by gradual cooling.
