Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of November.
Good morning, Oxnard.
🏘️ Community
The Port of Hueneme donated 1,000 frozen turkeys and holiday meal kits to military families, seniors, farmworkers and other local residents across Ventura County and hosted a Thanksgiving meal for about 500 unhoused community members at Casa Lopez on November 25.
Port leaders and community partners will continue to support residents with education initiatives, nonprofit partnerships and workforce programs into the new year—demonstrating their commitment to the community.
🌲 Environment
Three pest control companies reached a settlement and paid $3,150,000 for disposing of pesticides and hazardous waste the wrong way after audits found thousands of improperly discarded customer records—12 district attorneys led the investigation.
The companies must hire a third-party auditor for dumpster audits and train employees to follow the new rules.
Ventura County is offering local options to recycle Thanksgiving leftovers — Coastal Byproducts in Oxnard accepts cooking oil drop-offs at 1891 Sunkist Circle each weekday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., turning grease into biodiesel for nearby farms.
Food Forward also organizes volunteer teams to harvest surplus backyard fruit to help feed those in need.
