If you work the fields or buy local berries, this one lands close to home. , an exclusive berry supplier for Driscoll's, is shutting down operations at six locations, four in Ventura and two in Oxnard. ABC7 says the company filed the required paperwork to close its fields, and around 570 farmworkers will be laid off when they close in January.

The stakes are big for the county. According to the 2025 Farm Report, Ventura County crops grossed $2.4 billion, and about one third of that comes from strawberries.

  • Jobs end: Jan. 11, per a letter to Councilmember Bert Perello
  • Workforce: nearly 600 employees, most listed as harvesters
  • Cited causes: surging diesel, water and fertilizer prices

The closures reach hundreds of jobs in a $2.4 billion industry

Southern California Edison was considering power shutoffs as of Friday morning, according to its outage tracker. Recent rain helped, but the Weather Service says live fuel moisture is still in the 65-80% range. We suggest skipping anything that could spark a fire and reviewing your evacuation plan.

  • Outages: isolated downed trees and power outages expected in both counties
  • Fire risk: elevated from Friday night through Sunday

The Wrap

Frank DeMartino is trying to have a conversation, but the birds keep getting in the way. The Conejo Valley Audubon Society president walked through Valle Lindo Park in Camarillo and picked out a red-breasted nuthatch from a distant peep. For DeMartino, identifying birds is "almost involuntary." Sounds like a pretty good problem to have.
